Animal Care and Use Training

COMPLIANCE

In accordance with the federal regulations, the University shall provide training for all personnel involved in animal care and use.  No persons covered by the University Policy are permitted to be involved in the care and use of animals until they have been certified as completing the training prescribed by the ORC and their supervisor.

TRAINING: FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS, VOLUNTEERS, & AFFILIATES

This training is required for all covered persons involved with the care and use of animals.  The Animal Care & Use Online Basic Training is administered by CITI.  All animal researchers must also complete an online basic training refresher course every three years.  See below for specific instructions.

  • Survival Surgery Training

In addition to the Animal Care & Use Online Basic Training, this training is required for all covered persons dealing specifically with survival surgeries.  The Missouri State Attending Veterinarian will provide hands-on training.  If personnel will be conducting surgery on mice or rats, they are required to complete the CITI Module: Reducing Pain and Distress in Laboratory Mice & Rats.

  • Laboratory/Field Training

Faculty or staff conducting educational and research activities involving animals are responsible for providing their staff, students, and volunteers with training on specific hazards associated with their activities, as well as procedures and equipment to be use to reduce risks.
