Animal Care and Use Training

Compliance

In accordance with the Animal Welfare Act [13(d)], the University shall provide training for all personnel involved in animal care and use. No one is permitted to be involved in the care and use of animals until they have completed the training prescribed and certified by the ORA and their supervisor.

Training: Faculty, staff, students, volunteers, & affiliates

  • General Training

    • General training consists of online courses administered by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Required courses are based on research and species-specific areas. Personnel are required to complete both research area (Researcher-Wildlife, Reseacher-Agriculture, or Reseacher-Biomedical under question 5 Lab Animal Welfare Course) and applicable specices-specific courses (cattle, rats, amphibians, etc.) to fulfill general training requirements.  Note: an online refresher course is required every three years to ensure personnel are up-to-date with laws, regulations, and policies.

  • Survival Surgery Training

    • Personnel involved with animals that will undergo surgical procedures or a procedure that will cause more than momentray/slight pain and distress are required to complete hands-on training. Personnel involved with rodents are also required to complete a CITI training course for survival surgery of rodents and pain category E procedures. Currently, online training courses specific to reducing pain and distress for animals other than rodents are not available. Note: survival surgery training should be refreshed as needed. Competency checks for hands-on procedures will be conducted periodically by PI's and/or ORA personnel. 

  • Hands-On Training

    • Principal Investigators are responsible for providing their staff and students with hands-on training related to particular hazards associated with their activities, experimental procedures, and equipment to be used while working with animals. In some cases, ORA personnel may assist with hands-on training. Note: hands-on training should be refreshed as needed. Competency checks for hands-on procedures will be conducted periodically by PI's and/or ORA personnel.
