Cost Sharing or Matching

Cost share only when specifically required by the sponsor. Cost sharing in excess of the amount required should be questioned and minimized at the unit level. All cost sharing commitments must be documented in detail, both in the budget narrative and on the Internal Approval Form, so that proper approvals can be obtained prior to proposal submission. Give consideration to documentation needs when securing cost sharing commitments for your project. If it can't be documented, it can't be used as match! Typical cost share items include PI salary and fringe benefits. These costs are easily identifiable and documented.
