Working with Animals at MSU

In order to work with research animals at Missouri State University, the following three requirements must be met.  These requirements have no specific order.  To speed up the process, these requirements can be completed simultaneously.  

  1. Occupational Health & Safety Program & Medical Assessment:
    1. Complete the Risk Assessment Form
    2. Based upon the review of your completed Hazard Evaluation Form, you may be contacted to complete a Medical Assessment as well
  2. CITI Online Training The training required is dependent upon your department, the species of animal you will be working with, and the type of procedures that will be performed:
    1. Take the required specialization course (Agriculture, Wildlife, Biomedical)
    2. Take the required species-specific course(s) that relate to the species you will be working with (Working with Horses, Working with Mice, Working with Amphibians, etc.)
    3. Personnel involved with rodents that will undergo surgical procedures or a procedure that will cause more than momentary/slight pain and distress are required to complete Post-Procedure Care of Mice and Rats in Research:  Minimizing Pain and Distress
  3. You must be part of a current protocol: If you have not been part of a protocol previously, you will need to be added to a current protocol.
  4. Vivarium Access Request (if necessary) To complete this step, the previous three steps must already be completed
  5. Mosaic Access Request (if necessary) Mosaic is a software used to manage animal research data:  animal breeding, procedures, surgery, electronic animal health records, etc.

These rates are subject to change; therefore, an inflationary rate of 2% for each consecutive year of the project is suggested.

*For fiscal year 2024, the University has agreed to subsidize per diem rates for internally funded projects (contact ORA representative). Specialized services will still be charged accordingly.

Central Management Breeding Colony

A Sprague Dawley rat breeding colony is kept by Central Management and animals are available for purchase. For information contact Angela Goerndt (417-836-8405) or AGoerndt@missouristate.edu.
